Teenage girl Bethany Hamilton has always dreamed and had a passion for surfing and competing at high levels. But in a fatal accident, Bethany ends up losing her arm in a shark attack while out surfing. having to relearn new way about how she does everything come as a struggle. With her belief in God and her family and friends by her side, Bethany makes it her goal to get back out on the water and compete again and define all the odds against her.
Throughout the film, I found the character Bethany Hamilton to attract my attention the most. I found that Bethany was interesting to me with the way she handled everything, from losing her arm to having to relearn how to do the simplest of things again. seeing how she responds and reacts to her issues really inspires me to have a better more positive look towards life and how to overcome even your biggest hurdle ” I don’t need easy, I just need possible” It makes me think about how the world/society handles their own problems and issues. How everyone handles things differently. I felt like it hit close to home how Bethany relied on God to guide her and give her strength through this hard time within her life, and help her see the positive within what had happened. ” I don’t know why bad things happen to us sometimes but I have to believe something good is going to come out of this.” I felt I related to Bethany within this part as when I went through tough times with my family, moving houses, just feeling lost to who I am and what I was destined to do I looked towards god. I looked towards god-like Bethany did to try to guide me towards the correct path and help me through the tough time I was encountering. Unlike Bethany my full belief wasn’t there, I feel as though many people in today’s society turn to religions and faiths to help them through what they are struggling with and it really does have a positive impact (most of the time) on the greater look they have towards life.
Soul Surfer a movie based on a true story about a teenage girl named Bethany Hamilton who ends up losing an arm in a fatal accident with a shark. This film gives the message away to people that view it to never give up on your dreams even when you think they are the impossible, Bethany demonstrates throughout the film what it is truly like to be set on your dreams/ goals even with losing her arm she still dreams of getting back out on her surfboard and being able to surf again and maybe even compete “honey you can still surf without it”. with being so set on her dreams she never fails to give up to achieve what she has always wanted “she knows that I have two important competitions coming up, right? I mean she knows how much I’ve put into this, you know, how much you and the whole family put into this.” It does not only inspire me but I believe it inspires everyone who ends up watching this film to really look into your goals and dreams and never give up on them because if you put your mind to it almost everything is possible of achieving. with encountering this message within the film it has made me have a deep think within myself to what I truly desire and want to accomplish within my life, what my passions are. as a society I think we are doing an amazing job at offering as many things as possible for people, there are so many opportunities for everyone out there it’s just up to the person themself to actually go and achieve it.
Within the film, I believe that all the characters had different challenges to deal with but the greatest would have to be for Bethany with losing her arm. after Bethany lost her arm she had to learn new ways of doing things like tying up her hair, cutting oranges to surfing “the things that your gonna have to learn to do differently are extensive, but the good news is those things your arent going to be able to do small”. What helps Bethany overcome all her challenges is her desire to never give up she doesn’t let only having one arm hold her back. But not only does she have willpower she has the most supportive and caring family that helps her through it all “we are so blessed and thankful to God for all of you, because of your love and support over the last few weeks”, even though they all have to adapt to helping her out with tying her hair and cutting oranges they stick with her the whole way through supporting her on her journey and helping her get out there and be able to compete at surfing again. seeing the love and support from her friends through the hard times made me feel like I could relate on a certain level, with recently losing my mother to drinking I couldn’t have asked for better friends to help me through it always making sure I’m alright and if I’m not either talking to me about it or doing something to help keep my mind off of it. Having good support in tough times is a need even if the person doesn’t reach out. I didn’t and still, don’t reach out because I feel as no one understands what I’m going through because none of my friends have lost their mothers but then I realise they are doing their best for not having lost their mum. they just help me the way they know best, just like how Bethany’s family does for her none of them know what it’s like to have lost an arm but they help with what they know and what they don’t know they figure it out together.
I believe that the title of this movie was appropriately fitted to what the film is based around “soul surfer”. the film takes us through Bethany’s life after the accident and her dreams to still become a champion surfer because that’s where her soul lies “when can I surf again?”. the movie takes us viewers on the path of her becoming the surfer she is today “you can do all things”. Bethany doesn’t surf for the fact of competing and winning she surfs for the sheer fact because she loves it, and always will.
I personally would recommend this film to anyone. I think it is a really heartwarming and eye-opening film that most people would enjoy. The fact it is based on a true story makes the emotional and sentimental side that little bit more that it needed. this film has opened my eyes up to see what I’m truly am passionate about and am sure it has too many other viewers also “with you anythings possible”. It has made me want to go and thank everyone that has been there by my side through the good and bad times and really appreciate what they have done for me “through him that gives me strength”. I believe that anyone that needs clarity or just something to really think about this film would be suited to them, it is a child-friendly film that you definitely could watch as a family and after watching it could feel more connected as a whole. overall I highly recommend this film to anyone who’s willing to watch cause I believe they’ll end up wanting to watch it again.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film and definitely would watch it again even though I’ve watched it like 1000 times already. it’s such an eye-opening heartwarming film. I feel as though it gives the viewers a real chance to take a step back and look upon what they really truly are passionate about, and how they should drive towards their goals and dreams and just never give up.
